Adventures in Imagery

Simon and Thomas

The boys obliged me by modeling for me in my home-made studio...

Boulder Velodrome Outakes

Here are some outtakes from last night's shoot with Nick Traggis at the Boulder Velodrome. Had to compensate for the beautiful strip lighting with a high ISO and a butt load of flash

Experimenting with gelling the flash...

Portraits of Simon

My son Simon has gotten to the age where if you ask him to smile for the camera he will perform some sort of twisted grimace that is, in his mind, a smile. He's also at an age where he's very expressionate and I really wanted to capture that without the fake smile. I hit upon the idea of setting up my photo gear and telling him that he could photograph himself using the remote.

He's fascinated by photography and got so excited about this that we filled up an entire memory card in about 20 minutes.

Along the way though we managed to capture some great expressions that really show who Simon is as a person: thoughtful, funny, playful, silly, serious - he ran the gamut.

Vanessa in Action

I took another trip to the Stables to shoot Vanessa again - this time in action. She and Redd kindly agree to do some jumping at sunset so I could capture the dynamism of a horse in motion with my new flash.

Self Portraits

I finally... FINALLY... have my own lighting setup. Nothing fancy. A cheap LumoPro flash wired with a PC cord and shot through a 43" Westcott umbrella. These are my first experiments with it. Since I couldn't find a willing subject at short notice, I had to shoot myself.
